AXE LEASHES
A leash is useful for step cutting and for front pointing, but it can be a hindrance as you zigzag up or down slopes, changing your axe from hand to hand. However, if dropping your axe is a real possibility, and subsequent retrieval may be difficult, use a leash.
⢠Attach the leash to the axe head with a larkâs foot knot, making it easy to remove.
⢠Do not wrap the leash around the head, because it is uncomfortable and compromises your ability to hold the axe.
⢠Avoid leashes that slide up and down the shaft, because they get close to your crampons when not in use.
